The Magic Fairy Tree was originally part of a one-woman musical play based on Mark Twain's historical novel "Personal Recollections of Joan of Arc". However, the Tree soon found a life outside the play, performing to delighted audiences at Seattle's Fremont Fair. (Click on any photo for a larger view.)
The Magic Fairy Tree can stand perfectly still and "sleep", and she can also be awoken to roam about and even dance. Performer Charlotte Thistle has an extensive background in dance and theater, and a lifelong love of trees, both of which she draws on to create a hypnotic and uniquely vegetative movement style for the Tree.
The roots and the leaves of the tree are both crafted to allow for expressive manipulation . (Note that the roots were left out of the costume for the Fremont Fair due to the need to keep up with the marching speed of the parade, but you can see them in the fourth photo from an indoor performance of the play.)
